If you work in BV or Litigation Support, no one has to tell you that we live in a litigious society.  Sometimes, it seems that people are ready to go to court at the drop of a hat.  Employment law is an area that can be especially tricky to navigate, especially if you’re in a small practice and have to serve as your own HR department.  Donald Weiss, the author of “Fair, Square & Legal”, offers exactly what his book jacket says … “Safe Hiring, Managing & Firing Practices to Keep You & Your Company Out of Court”.

Employment law is intricate and often confusing to the layman. Behavior that you may think is innocent can have disastrous repercussions. Too often, managers simply don’t realize what can cause trouble. They unknowingly cross over the line into a legal showdown and learn the tough lesson that ignorance of the law is no excuse. “Fair, Square & Legal” is a key to understanding employment law in order to protect your company (and yourself) and, most importantly, treat your employees fairly.

The book is broken down into three primary sections: Safe Hiring, Safe Management and Safe Firing practices. Individual chapters cover topics like Recruiting, Interviewing, Preventing Sex Discrimination, Evaluations and Promotions, and Discipline and Firing Practices. Within each chapter, the author lays out useful definitions and explanations of the law, following up with specific examples of what you can and cannot say, can and cannot do. Every chapter also includes a real-life “casebook” to illustrate the issue in such a way that you can understand it better, or to provide examples you can use in your own business.

Never mind that sound workplace policies are fundamentally right, they also just make good business sense. Employees who know the rules – and know the rules are fair – are simply happier.
