You’re busy. You’re pressured by deadlines. Besides, things seem fine where you are. Why would…

There might be a time when something happens that has you thinking more about leaving. Maybe you interview with the idea that if you find something better, you’ll take it. Think twice.
That approach is like test-driving your decision to leave. And that’s a bad idea because you’ve given yourself no benchmark. Anything you interview for gets measured against a vague idea of what the future could be where you are.
The intelligent thing to do is have that conversation with the boss. It can be easier than you think.
Start by talking about the positives of your tenure (your growth, what you have learned) and how that naturally has you looking several years down the road here. What can they tell you about what you might expect?
Getting those answers could let you set aside the idea of a test drive, confident that you will stay. Or they could confirm that you’re going to leave. Not next week. Not next month. But eventually, you will leave.
Now, you’re ready to do a job search, not merely take a test drive.
