Business valuation is a small world. It’s easy to think you can make a job change alone, whisper a word in someone’s ear, or make a discreet phone call. However, a DIY job change carries as much risk as DIY legal work.
Confidentiality is the first thing you give up. You think it won’t hurt to talk about things with a co-worker, so your co-worker may think it won’t hurt to pass it along to someone else. In the worst case, that communications chain includes someone you don’t want to know.
Industry knowledge about the quality and reputation of various practices is something that very few BV professionals ever gain beyond the occasional quip or comment, which can just as often be little more than gossip.
Perspective about options is nearly impossible if you try to rely on others in the profession. Anyone’s view of what your options are is colored by individual experience. If, like you, they’ve spent all their time working near their own “tree,” you can’t expect them to have much of a view of the “forest.”
