Top Performers Aren’t Looking. But They’re Always Listening

Your phone rings. You answer. It’s a recruiter. Your go-to response: I’m not looking. And you’re right. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be listening.

Even so, you don’t have time to listen through. How do you separate the wheat from the chaff?

Listen to whether you hear anything about how this opportunity would improve your life. We’re not talking merely about money. Is there a more straightforward path up the career ladder? Would the work/life balance be more to your liking? Would you get to do work you’ve always wanted to do?

A good recruiter will give you context that applies to you and not simply read from a job description. Those are the times to listen more closely. You may hear about a great opportunity, but it’s not for you. You should get to know and rely on this recruiter for a perspective on your career.

Talking to a recruiter doesn’t mean you’re looking any more than talking with a financial advisor means you’re ready to retire. Top performers may be “looking,” but they’re always listening.
