You’re busy. You’re pressured by deadlines. Besides, things seem fine where you are. Why would…

It’s tempting to pass the buck when it comes to satisfaction at work. Sure, your boss wants you to be happy. But it’s not your happiness that’s on his mind most days.
It’s up to you to exercise power and influence to improve your work situation.
If you’re less than satisfied, take a look at where you are.
- List (in detail) what you love about your work and what you don’t. What can you fix? Can you trade parts of your job with someone, for example?
- Look at your latest performance review and identify a step to improve. Talk to your supervisor about any support you might need.
- Have a sit-down with someone who is both intelligent and sympathetic. Talk about your work and what you want from it. Saying things aloud can reveal solutions.
- Anytime it’s about a dilemma or dissatisfaction in the workplace, consider your role in it. What can you do to affect the outcome rather than wait for something (or someone) else to change?
When you realize you are more in control than you think, you put yourself in a stronger position to effect change. Finger-pointing and excuses can be a knee-jerk reaction.
Taking a risk and stepping forward is never easy and always risky. It’s up to you to change what you dislike and find out what you really want at work.
